Review – Working with God through Prayer – D. Edmond Hiebert

Bookfinder picture

If you want to reassess and revitalize your prayer life in a biblical way, I recommend the above book. I found it most helpful. It is the sort of book that can be read a chapter at a time over a few weeks, leaving gaps to chew over what you have learned.

Hiebert is challenging and yet at the same time very scriptural. I found the section on Israel’s war with Amalek especially helpful.

I think the older versions of the book used to specify “intercessory prayer” in the title. This must be kept in mind. Hiebert is not really dealing with worship or thanksgiving – his focus is rather intercession and supplication.

Recommended reading.

I will have to read it again!

Aggressive Anti-christianity

Ever wondered why the modern western world, with it’s open Bible, and “Christian” past is driving itself as fast as possible back into the dark? Why the scorning atheism? Why the modern hatred of all that is truly Christ’s? Why the despising of moral values brought to us down the generations from those who were more God-fearing than us?

The tide of evil seems to be filling up to the top of the cup. We see apostasy in modern “Christian” churches, we see homosexuality practised and praised, we see abortion condoned and countenanced and if you were to raise your voice against these things some people would just love to do to you what they did to John the Baptist, that is to take off your head.

I believe I have the answer. Paul wrote

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” (1 Tim 3v1-6 NKJV)

Satan must know that time is running out. The Lord told a parable about a man possessed with a demon. The demon left him for a time. Then when he came back to the man he found that the man had just prepared for him, and swept the place for him and made it nice and tidy, so the demon invited seven others in with him as well – the last end of the man was worse than the first.” This was just like Israel, they had been disobedient to God, but God still sent his Son, eventually they rejected Him – put Him to death. The Lord warns them that the last state will be worse than the first, they had closed their door to Christ and opened it to Satan. This is surely just as true of this sin loving western world.

Be sure, O West, – privelaged west, prayed-for west, scientific, sophistocated west – Be sure, your sins will find you out.

It’s great that as Christians, we are not part of it in God’s sight, we have been redeemed, and delivered from it by the matchless, undeserved grace of our God.

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Galatians 1v3-5)
